Thank You Hot Head Show

Posted in Hot Head Show on March 14, 2011 by moosejuice

Special thanks to Jordan Copeland and the Hot Head Show bunch (that would be Vaughn Stokes and Beatamax) for the totally cool signed vinyl copies of the Bummer/Hotel Room single.  And for the note signed “Abysmally Yours.”  I’ll get Shorny B and King Mike their copy ASAP.  The perfect antidote for the illness that is modern radio.

Way too cool.

And the music’s like nothing you’ve ever heard, in case you have missed my previous posts.    Sample a bunch of their music and download The Most Truly Abysmal release of 2010, The Lemon EP, by clicking on this lengthy sentence. By the way, the EP download is free, courtesy of the HHS dudes themselves.  You can read my review of The Lemon EP here by clicking on this abbreviated sentence.

Enjoy Abysmally…

Hot Head Show – Blowing My Mind…AGAIN!

Posted in Hot Head Show on January 19, 2011 by moosejuice

So HHS guitarist/cunning linguist Jordan Copeland emails me last week with a link to their new track “Bummer,” a song that constitutes one of the most well spent two minute spans in my entire musical life.  We won’t go into detail as to just how long said musical life is.

Anyway, I have listened to it at least a hundred times in the past week and continue to start my mornings with it on the headphones.   Musicianship and songwriting are once again stellar, but the single best thing about Hot Head Show is that they’ve melded myriad influences into a personality that is entirely their own and “Bummer” is proof positive of this.

Hot Head Show‘s debut full-length (aptly titled “The Lemon LP“) is due for release this spring, and if “Bummer” is any indication the boys will be comfortably off their respective rockers once again.

There’s simply no one else like them, and “Bummer” continues their budding tradition of melding hooks, melody and humour in just the right balance.  I could wax pseudo-philosophic about these guys for hours and probably ruin the experience for you all. lol

Hell, just click here to listen and show Jordan, Vaughn and Beatamax some loooooove…http://soundcloud.com/hot-head-show/sets/bummer-hotel-room/s-DKpXR

P.S.  The neo-barbershop backup vocals starting at the 1:05 mark just RULE!

Hot Head Show – The Lemon EP

Hot Head Show 2009

Man, I don’t even know where to begin. I’ve never heard anything quite like this before and I really can’t compare it directly with any one band. Absolutely one of the most fun albums I’ve ever heard in my life.

As esoteric as any Frank Zappa album ever was (albeit with simple guitar/bass/drums instrumentation), The Lemon EP slips from garage to ska to twisted rock to avantgarde effortlessly…with one of the most fun and playful bass guitars I’ve ever heard and sharp British wit.  At times (such as on Whiskey Pocket) they remind me of what The Police might have sounded like had they explored the garage, had too much to drink, and refused all of Sting’s pop songs.   Other times (especially Chopstickabean) they sound like the most brilliant cartoon that needs no animation.

No kidding…this is a fiercely original sound that has to be experienced. Guaranteed to make you smile, confuse and confound you.  And the musicianship is ludicrously top notch.  Just the damnedest thing I’ve ever heard. I’m amazed at how addicting this sound is…and the one-two punch of Whiskey Pocket and The Lemon is classic.

An absolute blast…and the band is kind enough to let you download free through their website: www.hotheadshow.com. The band suggests you download the whole EP and listen to it as one piece of music.   I totally agree.

Check ’em out.  You really have to hear it to believe it.  You owe it to yourself.

Hot Head Show (Are you freakin’ kidding me?)

Every once in a while a band comes along with a sound so insane (yet so undeniably well done and totally pro) that one’s head just spins in wonderment until you realize you really can do nothing but laugh, enjoy, and go with the flow.

‘Cos that’s undoubtedly what Hot Head Show are doing.  My friend Shorny B just told me about this band as they opened for Les Claypool last night in Atlantic City at the House of Blues.  I can only imagine what they’re like live…must be one of the most fun bands out there.   I just love this stuff.

When I heard the intro to this song, I immediately thought (and this is meant as a sincere compliment) “Well, they’re definitely influenced by Les Claypool and/or Primus.”  But then elements of ska, Zappa and wry British humor enter the mix and…well…

Enjoy Abysmally…
